Romania is a step back in time. Like so many former Communist cities, the glorious old architecture remains, but it is often in need of repair, and the electrical wires are terrifying. |
There are large monumental carved stone buildings from the late 18th and early 19th century, when it was at powerful urban city. Some of the monumental buildings have been restored and some have cracks and crumbling areas desperately in need of repair. Many buildings in Bucharest look very Parisian. |
The old architecture is often rendered unattractive since it is placed next to very modern cinder block buildings. There is no apparent city planning. |
Bucharest is plagued with the same graffiti that ruins many of Europe’s beautiful old buildings. The Opium Stage Club and the Sex Shop in the mall attest to the serious night life in town. |
Yet often around another corner is a divine Orthodox Church complete with onion domes or a Byzantine Chapel from the early 18th century. This one is the Strahovsty Monastery. |
